Wild Sound Artist Spotlight!

Barbara McAfee is a singer/songwriter, keynoter, author, and voice coach who merges lessons from

12 years in organization development with the transformative power of music.

Michael Johnson has performed and lived more music and recorded more hits than you would imagine.
His voice immediately identifies him as the man who sings "Bluer Than Blue," "Give Me Wings," "That's That," and other landmark songs. His music shows a diversity, depth and heart that only come from years of dedication to a labor of love. 
When asked what he would have you know about himself, Michael says:
• "Tell them that I love it." He started playing at age thirteen and just never quit. Singing, playing, writing and recording are the only things he's ever done and he loves it.
• "Tell them I play guitar." He really plays guitar. He studied in Barcelona and he plays on all his records with a unique and distinctive style. His playing is an important part of his show.
• "I am a soloist at heart." Michael often performs alone, and he has elevated the art. He prefers the intimacy and spontaneity of a show that can change with the moment.
• "Tell them I'm a showman. I like to talk to people and I love to make them laugh. And, of course, I have to move them with the music. That's the whole thing. Without that, there is no reason to be on stage."
What one remembers of Michael is the texture of his voice, the meaning of the lyric and the music of the guitar -- singer, song and sound. And the feeling of being at home with a friend.

Extensive experience in recording Jazz, Classical, Folk, Rock, Experimental and all other types of music and vocal performances.

Digital Recording

As far as we know, Wild Sound produced the first Pro-Tools recording project in Minneapolis. Matthew has been working with Digidesign's Pro-Tools system since 1991 when the original Pro Tools system was released featuring 4 voices, ProDECK and ProEDIT software. Recording requires much more than simply knowing which keys and buttons to push. Our years of experience playing, listening to and recording music combined with our technical skills will insure that your project is done accurately and efficiently. We're also very nice guys to be around.

Analogue Recording

To tell you the truth, we get maybe one request every year to record with tape. So we don't have much invested in it. We do have a very nice Otari MX-5050 1/2" 8-track machine, and a currently-being-worked-on Studer A80 1" 8-track that Matthew has owned for 20-odd years. Who needs more than 8 tracks anyways?..

Location Recording

We can bring a Pro-Tools system to your location. We've done albums this way. We also have a nice Nagra if you're looking for old-skool mono.

Mixing Services

Tracking at home, on location or perhaps at a different studio? Our excellent out-of-the-box analogue chain, enormously excellent Westlake monitors, SSL console and of course talent plus years of experience will ensure that your tracks sound great.

Digital Mastering

Not just "In-The-Box" plugin "mastering", we have a dedicated system that includes a Lavry LE 4496, Empirical Labs Fatso Jr., Summit Audio Dual Program Equalizer, Manley 16X2 line mixer, Vari-Mu and Massive Passive, Crane Song STC-8 and Requisite LTM MkII. Plus all the proper plugins and software. Many samples of our mastering work available by request.

Archival Services

Transfer your tapes and vinyl to the digital realm. We also have somewhat obsolete decks such as DA-88 and DAT on hand for such purposes. We have a Thorens TD160 with a new Grado cartridge for vinyl transfers. Cassettes and even 8-tracks can be turned into 1s and 0s.

Consultation

We will provide you with useful and knowledgeable advice in our areas of expertise. This includes recording, electric guitars and amplifiers, gear, sounds and cooking.

Video Recording

Many school, scholarship and grant auditions require a DVD of the performance. We have a camera and lighting setup with which we can record a visual record as well as audio.
